Description | This is a photograph of a German land dredger used to excavate material from the Manchester Ship Canal. Huge machines like this one were employed along the Ship Canal to help with the removal of thousands of tons of earth. There were various types of land dredgers. German machines like this one were constructed by L'becker Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft of L'beck. They were more commonly known as the 'L'becker' or 'the German'. The main difference between these machines and the French design was that the wagons were loaded inside the German dredger, whilst the French machine's wagons were filled at the back. |
